Sitter
José Moreno Hernández, born 07 Aug 1962
Exhibition Label
Born French Camp, California
This large-format photograph shows former NASA astronaut José Hernández in uniform. The son of migrant farm workers from Mexico, Hernández grew up along what he calls the “California Circuit,” picking produce between March and December. As a senior in high school, he was inspired by the first Latinx NASA astronaut: “I was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton, California, and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Díaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps,” recalls Hernández. “That was the moment I said ‘I want to fly in space.’”
After earning a master’s degree in electrical engineering, Hernández developed the first full-field digital mammography system for the early detection of breast cancer. Then, in 2009, he served as a crewmember on space shuttle mission STS-128, tasked with completing construction of the International Space Station.
