- Throughout her decades-long career, legendary singer-songwriter and activist Joan Baez has maintained an unwavering commitment to social, political, and humanitarian causes. A vital force in the folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s, Baez was immersed in the civil rights movement and opposition to the Vietnam War. Her repertoire of protest songs reflected this activist stance.
- This photograph shows Baez wearing a peace necklace and holding her guitar at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. At the march, Baez led the crowd in singing “We Shall Overcome” at the Lincoln Memorial, where Dr. Martin Luther King (portrait bust at right), delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech the same day. Baez has also performed and protested alongside members of the United Farm Workers union, whose founders are shown in the painting at left. “Action is the antidote to despair,” Baez has said.
