29c Toy Steam Engine single

National Postal Museum

Object Details

Description
Five new 29-cent stamp designs ushered in the 1992 holiday season at First Day of Issue ceremonies in Kansas City, Missouri, and Washington, DC, on October 22. Both the Contemporary and Traditional Christmas stamps were available in booklets of twenty and panes of fifty.
The 29-cent Christmas stamp was issued at the Postage Stamp Mega Event in New York City on October 28, 1992. Featuring the same locomotive design that appears on the Contemporary Christmas block of four stamps, the eighteen-stamp configuration is identical to the Liberty Torch stamp pane except that the design appears horizontally instead of vertically.
The single Traditional Christmas stamp, designed by Bradbury Thompson, is based on the painting "Madonna and Child With Saints" by Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini. The original painting is displayed at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
The contemporary designs by Lou Nolan feature colorful renditions of antique toys: a pony and rider, a locomotive, a steam engine, and a steamship.
The sheet stamps were printed in the offset process by Ashton-Potter America, Inc., and the booklets in the photogravure process by the American Bank Note Company. The ATM stamps were printed on the photogravure press by Avery Dennison
